The Feranby Story

The Labrador Retriever

In 1822 a traveler to Newfoundland gave an account of a small number of water dogs being used to retrieve water birds, he found their short coats did not retain icy water  even in freezing temperatures.
The Earl of Malmerbury took a liking to them and they were imported into England. Dog taxes eventually caused the Labrador Retriever to lose its popularity in Newfoundland and the quarantine laws of England   prohibited anymore  to be imported. The British however  liked  the Lab's
qualities as a Retriever and began  crossing with other types of retrievers. The Labrador traits remained dominant .
True fanciers of the breed set up a standard to establish the breed  and discourage further interbreeding.
In 1903 the English Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a separate breed.

CREATION VERSE

When God  made the Earth and Sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
And all the birds and bees,
And when his work was finished
not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this earth of mine
And give each one a name"
And so he traveled land and sea
and every where he went
A little creature followed him
Until it's strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me"
The Father smiled and softly said
"I've left you to the end,
I've turned my own name back to front
And called you Dog,  my friend."

Feranby Labradors

We got our first registered Labrador Retriever, Milaje Toffees Lucy ("Lucy") in 1992. Lucy is retired and lives close by with a good friend. I see her every day when Gabrielle and I take the dogs out to exercise. We bred Lucy in 1994 after her hip score was 3-3 which is nil grade (Hip Dysplasia Free). She was a fantastic mum and looked after her puppies very well. From the litter we kept the only black girl, we called her "Faero" (Feranby Tarbaby Faero).

Faero has had two litters - 9 puppies in 1996 and 7 puppies March 1998. There are pictures of some of our puppies on Faero's page. We kept a puppy from Faero's second litter, Feranby Klassic Kopy ("Tilly").
