Benji

(1984)

Benji was our first rabbit and was bought from the pet shop. We knew very little about rabbits but mum had wanted one for approximately 40 years so we finally got one.

We were so happy with him but wondered why his ear hung down. So, a visit to the vet revealed that he had ear mites. He also had terrible diarrhoea and coccidiosis (a protozoal bowel disease) which did not clear up after weeks of medication.

Finally the vet decided that it would be best to do an exploratory operation to see what the problem was. He had the equivalent of appendicitis in humans and, tragically, died a few days later.

After Benji, we were much more careful when choosing our baby rabbits and never managed to get one with so many problems again. It was a little disheartening to have this much bad luck first off but we decided to try again and bought Bugsy.

We could only find one good photo of Benji as we only had him a short time.
